• A Heritage Dating Back to the 14th Century

Thailand’s celadon tradition dates back to the 14th century, with the earliest known celadon wares produced during the Sukhothai period.

  • Early Inspirations

The development of Thai celadon is believed to have been influenced by Chinese ceramics imported into Thailand during the Sukhothai Kingdom.

  • Sangkhalok Tradition

Between the years 1238 and 1437 AD., Sukhothai – then capital of the First Thai Kingdom – was the production center of the green-color glazed stoneware known as “Sangkhalok”.

About Baan Celadon

Baan Celadon is a leading producer and distributor of handmade celadon ceramics in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Established in 1989, the business was founded to preserve and promote traditional Lanna celadon art while adapting it for modern markets. Our Celadon glaze is characterized by its jade-green glaze, hand-carved patterns, and locally sourced ash-based finish, requiring meticulous craftsmanship and time-intensive production processes.

Our production process is rooted in traditional handmade craftsmanship, from clay preparation and shaping to carving, glazing, and high-temperature reduction firing that creates our signature crackled finish. This commitment to traditional techniques limits our production volume but allows us to achieve exceptional detail and character in every piece.

How is Celadon made?

Clay is carefully prepared to achieve the ideal consistency and moisture content for shaping. Skilled artisans then shape each piece by hand using potter’s wheels, molds, or jiggers, depending on its size and design. The shaped clay is left to rest for several days before the pattern is carved by hand.

Each piece is then slowly air-dried in a well-ventilated space for several days to several weeks, depending on its size and complexity. This gradual drying process is essential to prevent cracking and cannot be rushed.

The dried pieces undergo a first firing at approximately 800–900°C to produce a durable but highly fragile bisque. Baan Celadon’s signature jade-green or blue glaze is then applied by dipping, followed by careful detailing and trimming.

Finally, the glazed pieces are carefully arranged in the kiln to account for variations in size, temperature, and airflow. They are fired at 1,260–1,280°C for over twelve hours in an oxygen-reducing atmosphere, creating the distinctive finish characteristic of Baan Celadon.

Under glaze Painting & Stone Pattern

Following the initial firing stages, selected pieces are carefully transferred to our specialized painting room, where skilled artisans hand-paint each design with precision, patience, and attention to detail.

Our signature under glaze patterns require exceptional brushwork to capture their graceful, natural forms, while Stone Patterns use delicate shading techniques to create depth and texture. Artisans also apply finishing details such as Engobe highlights and Rim Brown accents, adding refinement, warmth, and contrast to each piece.

Hand-painting is a meticulous craft developed through years of experience. Every brushstroke reflects the skill and dedication of our artisans, ensuring that each piece is unique while preserving the character and heritage of traditional Thai ceramics.
